Who is Mikaela Shiffrin?

Her mother became a nationally prominent masters racer and her father, an anaesthesiologist, had raced for Dartmouth as an undergraduate and skied at weekends growing up. When she was eight the family moved to rural New Hampshire for her father's work at a medical centre. Her older brother went to a ski academy in northeastern Vermont, and she went to middle school there too, then moved to Colorado with her parents, then went back.
The junior results are worth reading because of how fast they came. In March 2010, at fourteen, she won both the slalom and the giant slalom at a competition in Italy against skiers from forty nations. The following winter, having just reached the minimum age, she won an international-level super combined in December 2010, in only the eighth race at that level she had ever entered, then took three podiums in her next three races and two more wins after that. A month later she took a junior world bronze, the day after being ill with a stomach virus.
Her first World Cup podium, on 29 December 2011 at sixteen, is the moment that explains her. She started fortieth, lost her left shin guard halfway down, and finished twelfth in the first run. Then she posted the fastest second run of the day and took third. A year later, at seventeen, she won her first World Cup race in a night slalom in Sweden, the second youngest American ever to win one, and won twice more within a month. She took the season slalom title that year.
In 2014, at eighteen years and three hundred and forty five days, she became the youngest Olympic slalom gold medallist in history.
In February 2020 her father died unexpectedly in an accident. She was twenty four. She has gone on to become the most decorated American alpine skier in World Championships history, winning her eighth world championship gold on 11 February 2025, which took her to fifteen medals from eighteen career world championship races and made her the most successful skier of the modern era. She was named one of the hundred most influential people in the world in 2023, joined the ownership group of a football club in May 2025, and was given an honorary doctorate by her father's old university that June.
