Who is Mariana Enriquez?

She grew up in Valentin Alsina, a suburb on the edge of Greater Buenos Aires, and went to La Plata to study journalism and social communication at the national university there. La Plata had a literary scene and a punk scene and she was in both. Her first novel, Bajar es lo peor, was published in 1995, when she was twenty one.
Most writers who publish that early either vanish or become full time writers. She did neither. She went into journalism and stayed, eventually as deputy editor of Radar, the cultural supplement of the Buenos Aires newspaper Pagina 12, a job she has held while writing everything else. The fiction built slowly underneath it: short stories in horror and the Latin American Gothic, a form nobody had quite used for Argentina in that way.
Things We Lost in the Fire took the Premio Ciutat de Barcelona in 2017. Our Share of Night, a long novel, won the Premio Herralde in 2019. The Dangers of Smoking in Bed carried her into English. In 2024 Argentina gave her the Platinum Konex for the decade's work in her field, in 2025 she published a nonfiction collection about visiting cemeteries, and Netflix announced a series built from her stories. Her line is worth reading because almost all of it happened around the edges of a full time job.
