Who is Marc Benioff?
He was selling software at fifteen.
He was born in San Francisco in 1964 and grew up in Hillsborough. In 1979, when he was fifteen, he founded Liberty Software, creating and selling games such as Flapper and King Arthur's Heir for the Atari 8-bit. He graduated from Burlingame High School in 1982 and received a Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of Southern California in 1986.
He founded Salesforce in 1999, working from a San Francisco apartment. The argument underneath it was that business software should be something you reach rather than something you install, which is now so ordinary that it is hard to remember it was ever a claim.
He has written four books with co-authors: Compassionate Capitalism in 2004, The Business of Changing the World in 2006, Behind the Cloud in 2009 and Trailblazer in 2019. He and his wife Lynne bought Time magazine on 16 September 2018 for a hundred and ninety million dollars, and he started the venture fund Time Ventures in 2019, two of whose companies went public in 2021. He became co-chief executive of Salesforce in November 2021. In September 2025 he reduced the company's support workforce from nine thousand to about five thousand, saying he needed fewer people, with the company stating that its automated agents were handling half of customer interactions and had reduced support costs. A freeze on hiring engineers continued into May 2026 while sales hiring went on.
