Who is Brian Armstrong?
He read it in 2010.
He was born near San Jose in 1983 to two engineers, and took dual bachelor's degrees in economics and computer science at Rice University in Texas in 2005, followed by a master's in computer science in 2006. In 2010 he came across the Bitcoin white paper, published under the name Satoshi Nakamoto. It is nine pages long.
In 2011 he joined Airbnb as a software engineer, where he saw how payments worked across the hundred and ninety countries the company operated in at the time. That is an unusually direct education in why moving money between currencies is hard, and he had already read the paper.
In 2012 he entered the Y Combinator accelerator, took a 150,000 dollar investment and used it to fund Coinbase, which he co-founded with Fred Ehrsam the same year. A funding round in 2018 valued the company at 8.1 billion dollars. In December 2020 it filed to go public through a direct listing, which it completed in April 2021. He is also a co-founder of NewLimit, a company working on ageing.
The moments
Brian Armstrong's timeline.
The 2000s
Two degrees at Rice
Milestone, and it changed his direction. Economics and computer science together, which is the exact pair the later work needed.
A master's in computing
Milestone. One more year, at the same university.
The 2010s
He read the white paper
Milestone, and it changed everything. Nine pages, published by somebody nobody has met.
A software engineer at Airbnb
Milestone, and it changed his direction. A direct education in why moving money between currencies is hard.
Keep the engineering job
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: leave and build it, taken, or stay at Airbnb. Coinbase was valued at 8.1 billion dollars in 2018 and listed publicly in April 2021.
Y Combinator, and Coinbase
Milestone, and it changed everything. A hundred and fifty thousand dollars, and a company.
Valued at 8.1 billion
Milestone, and it changed his direction. Six years from an accelerator cheque to eight billion dollars.
The 2020s
Filed to go public
Milestone, and it changed his direction. A direct listing, which skips the banks and the discount they take.
The direct listing
Milestone, and it changed everything. Nine years from the accelerator to a public company.
NewLimit raises a round
Milestone. A second company, on a problem with no market yet.
Still on the calls
Milestone. Thirteen years in, and still the one answering the questions.
The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving started as nine pages nobody had to read, and the only unusual thing he did was read them properly and then spend fifteen years on what they implied.
Your turn
Every line draws a unique story.
His turned on reading one short document and taking it seriously. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
