Who is Lupita Nyong'o?
She fetched coffee on set, and won the Oscar.
She was born in Mexico City while her family was living there, and raised in Kenya from the age of three. She took a bachelor's degree in film and theatre studies in the United States, and then started at the bottom of the business she wanted to be in: as a production assistant, the job of fetching, carrying and standing in the rain so that other people can work.
She made her acting debut in a short film in 2008 and went home to Kenya to star in a television series that ran from 2009 to 2012. Then she did something people at that stage usually do not: she went back to school, taking a master's in acting at the Yale School of Drama in her late twenties. Her first feature film role came out of it, as Patsey in Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave in 2013, and she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for it.
What followed has been deliberately varied. She made her Broadway debut in 2015 as a teenage orphan in a play and was nominated for a Tony. She has done motion capture in a science fiction trilogy, voiced a wolf in a children's film, played Nakia in two of the largest superhero films ever made, and carried two horror films, one in 2019 and one in 2024, the second of which required her to perform almost the whole picture without speaking. She has won an Academy Award, a Daytime Emmy and an actors' guild award, and been nominated for two BAFTAs, a Golden Globe and a Tony.
The moments
Lupita Nyong'o's timeline.
The 1980s
Born in Mexico City
Everyday. A Mexican birth certificate and a Kenyan childhood.
The 2000s
A degree in film
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Film and theatre, both halves, taken seriously.
A production assistant
Everyday, and it changed everything. The bottom rung, fetching and carrying so other people can work.
A short film
Milestone, and it changed her direction. The first time somebody pointed a camera at her on purpose.
Home, for Shuga
Milestone, and it changed her direction. She went home to work, which is not the usual direction.
The 2010s
Go back to drama school
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: train properly first, taken, or keep the momentum. Her first feature film role followed the degree, and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Back to school at twenty nine
Milestone, and it changed everything. Already on television, and she went back to be taught.
12 Years a Slave
Milestone, and it changed everything. Her first feature, and one of the hardest parts written that decade.
The Academy Award
Milestone, and it changed everything. A first feature film, and the Academy Award for it.
Broadway, and a Tony nomination
Milestone, and it changed her direction. A stage play and a space opera, in the same twelve months.
Black Panther
Milestone, and it changed everything. One of the biggest films ever made, and she was in the centre of it.
The 2020s
Almost no dialogue
Milestone, and it changed her direction. A leading role carried almost entirely without speaking.
Nairobi raised her and Mexico City is on the birth certificate, and she claims both in public. What it has set moving is the unfashionable lesson in the middle of it: she had already been on television and she went back to drama school anyway, and the part that won her an Oscar came directly out of the two years she spent training.
Your turn
Every line draws a unique story.
Hers began by carrying other people's equipment and reached an Academy Award in five years. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
