Who is Chloé Zhao?
Two films nobody saw, and then Best Director.
She was born in Beijing, the daughter of an executive at one of the country's largest state-owned steel companies, and works under the name she chose. Her first films are independent, small and made largely with people who are not actors, playing versions of themselves. Songs My Brothers Taught Me premiered at Sundance in 2015 and was nominated for a first feature award. The Rider followed in 2017 and was nominated for best film and best director at the independent awards.
Nomadland, in 2020, is the one everybody knows. She wrote it, produced it, edited it and directed it, which is four jobs on the same film, and it won the Golden Lion at Venice and the audience award in Toronto before it reached the Academy. It earned her four Academy Award nominations of her own. She won Best Picture and Best Director, becoming the first woman of colour to win the directing award and only the second woman ever. She won directing awards from the directors' guild, the Golden Globes and BAFTA in the same season, and was the second woman to win each of those too.
What she did next was the opposite film in every way: a superhero picture for the largest studio in the world, released in 2021, with a cast of movie stars and a budget to match. Then back again. Hamnet premiered at a festival in 2025 to acclaim, won the Golden Globe for best drama and the BAFTA for outstanding British film, and was nominated for Best Picture. She was nominated for Best Director a second time, making her only the second woman after Jane Campion to be nominated twice in that category.
