Who is Karol G?

She was born Carolina Giraldo Navarro in Medellin in 1991. Her father was a musician and pushed her forward early: she was on El Factor X, the Colombian version of the television talent show, at fourteen, and when the industry would not carry her, he promoted her himself and toured her around Colombia. That is an unusual amount of belief to have behind you, and it was not enough on its own.
A major label declined to sign her, on the basis, as it was put to her, that a woman would not be successful in reggaeton. This was a commercial judgement about her whole category rather than about her, and at the time it was not an eccentric one, because the genre was almost entirely male. By 2014 she had made no real progress and she left, moving to New York to work and stay with an aunt. It reads like the end of the attempt.
In New York she saw advertisements on the subway for classes in music business administration, enrolled, and came back at it from the other side, understanding the industry as a business rather than as a door she was waiting outside. Unstoppable came in 2017. Tusa, with Nicki Minaj, arrived on 7 November 2019 and became one of the defining records of the genre. Manana Sera Bonito in February 2023 was the first Spanish-language album by a woman to enter the Billboard 200 at number one, and it won the Grammy for Best Musica Urbana Album in February 2024. On 12 and 19 April 2026 she headlined Coachella, the first Latin woman to do it. Her line is worth reading because the judgement made about her was about every woman in her genre, and she is the counterexample.
