The character arc of Cillian Murphy

Born 25 May 1976 in Douglas, Cork, and drawn to music before acting. Between then and now sit a five-album record deal the band turned down, a law degree left unfinished, a survivor running through an emptied London, twelve years as Thomas Shelby, and, at last, the Academy Award for Best Actor, the first for anyone born in Ireland. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Tap the line to pluck it. Hover or tap any mark for its card. Drawn from the public record of his life; the sources are at the foot of the page.

Who is Cillian Murphy?

He let the sure things go, and kept the stage.

Before the films there was a band. As a young man in Cork he played in The Sons of Mr Green Genes with his brother, and they were offered a five-album deal, which they turned down. He had started a law degree at University College Cork in the same stretch of years, failed the first-year exams, and left. What pulled him away from both the record contract and the courtroom was a small stage production: Enda Walsh cast him in Disco Pigs in 1996, and he did not look back.

The line does not run straight up. His breakout came as the survivor Jim in 28 Days Later in 2002, but two years later he screen tested to play Bruce Wayne and did not get the part. The director who passed him over, Christopher Nolan, cast him instead as a villain in Batman Begins, and kept casting him: Inception, Dunkirk, and eventually the lead. In between he became Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders, a role he carried for twelve years and made his own.

In 2023 Nolan gave him his first leading part, the physicist at the centre of Oppenheimer, and in March 2024 it won him the Academy Award for Best Actor, the first for a performer born in Ireland. On the stage he called himself, in his own words, "a very proud Irishman". His line is worth reading because the two doors he shut early, the record deal and the law, are what left him free to open the one that mattered.

The moments

Cillian Murphy's timeline.

The 1990s

~1996

Turned down the record deal

Setback, and it changed his direction. The band was offered a five-album deal and refused it. He chose the stage over the studio.

1 Jun 1996

The deal, or the stage

Crossroads, decided.

The paths laid out: turn it down for acting, taken, or sign with the label. The stage led to film, to Thomas Shelby, and, in 2024, to the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Sep 1996

A stage debut in Cork

Milestone, and it changed his direction. His professional debut, playing a volatile Cork teenager, the part that turned him toward acting.

Jun 1997

Left law behind

Setback, and it changed his direction. He had begun a law degree in 1996, failed the first year, and left to act rather than resit.

The 2000s

1 Nov 2002

28 Days Later opens

Milestone. As the survivor Jim, waking in an emptied London, the role that carried his name past Ireland.

~2003

Passed over for Batman

Setback, and it changed his direction. He screen tested to play Bruce Wayne and did not get it. The director cast him as a villain instead.

Jun 2005

Scarecrow in Batman Begins

Milestone. The villain's part became the first of many films with Christopher Nolan, a near miss made a beginning.

Nov 2005

The lead in Breakfast Pluto

Milestone. A tender lead as Patrick Kitten Braden, and a first Golden Globe nomination for a leading role.

The 2010s

Jul 2010

A part in Inception

Milestone. Another Nolan film, a quieter role at the heart of a very loud one, the collaboration still building.

Sep 2013

Peaky Blinders begins

Milestone, and it changed his direction. He became Thomas Shelby, the Birmingham gang leader, the role that made him a household name.

Jul 2017

A quiet turn in Dunkirk

Everyday. A small, near wordless part as a shell shocked soldier, credited only as the man on the boat.

The 2020s

Apr 2022

Peaky Blinders ends

Milestone. Six series in, Tommy Shelby's television story closed, twelve years after it began.

21 Jul 2023

The title role in Oppenheimer

Milestone, and it changed everything. His first leading role for Nolan, as the physicist behind the atomic bomb, after five films together.

10 Mar 2024

Best Actor at the Oscars

Milestone, and it changed everything. The Academy Award for Best Actor, the first ever won by a performer born in Ireland.

6 Mar 2026

Back as Tommy Shelby

Milestone. He returned to the role one last time in the Peaky Blinders film, still working, still choosing it.

The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now and not at the end. He is still working, still choosing the harder part, and the young man in Cork who turned down a record deal is the reason the rest is here to draw.

Your turn

Every story draws a unique line.

His took three decades of unshowy choices to reach that stage. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about a minute.
