Born Jason Bradley DeFord on 4 December 1984 in the Antioch neighbourhood of Nashville, to a meat salesman who worked as a bookie on the side and a mother who lived with illness and addiction. Between then and now sit a baptism at fourteen and an arrest the same year, ten years of going in and out of jail on charges that included possession with intent to distribute and aggravated robbery, a music career begun in 2003 selling mixtapes out of his car, a first Grand Ole Opry appearance in November 2021, a first number one on rock radio in May 2022, a sold out arena in his own city, a first country number one in January 2023, a Senate committee in 2024, a pardon in December 2025, and three Grammy Awards. Who is Jelly Roll?
He was baptised and arrested the same year. Both of them stuck.
His father sold meat and took bets on the side. His mother lived with mental illness and addiction. He was baptised at fourteen, and has said that around the same time he began dabbling in drugs and stopped going to church: the same year that he got baptised, he got arrested, and that started what would be a ten year cycle of incarceration in and out. From his teens into his twenties he was arrested repeatedly, on charges including possession with intent to distribute and aggravated robbery.
The music started in 2003, out of hip hop, and for a very long time it was a cottage industry. He sold mixtapes out of his car. He was in a group, then released mixtape after mixtape and independent album after independent album, collaborating with other artists on the edges of the business. He played a festival run by a horrorcore label in 2012. None of this was a career in the sense most people mean.
It turned in his late thirties. He made his Grand Ole Opry debut in November 2021. In May 2022 he had his first number one on rock radio. That December he sold out the fifteen thousand seat arena in his own city, and brought half of Nashville on stage with him. In January 2023 he had his first number one on country radio with a song he had co-written, and in February he set a record with a twenty fifth week at the top of the emerging artists chart, which tells you how long the climb had been.
Then the awards: three at the country music video awards in 2023 for one song, New Artist of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards that November, a Best New Artist nomination at the Grammys at thirty nine, and three Grammy wins in 2026 across country, duo performance and contemporary Christian music, which is an unusual spread for one night.
In January 2024 he sat in front of a United States Senate committee and spoke in support of legislation on fentanyl, as somebody who had distributed illegal drugs. What he said there is the shortest summary of his line anybody could write: he was part of the problem, and he was standing there as a man who wanted to be part of the solution. In December 2025 he received a pardon for his previous convictions.
