Born 11 July 1960 in Mianeh, in East Azerbaijan, Iran. Who is Jafar Panahi?
A court forbade him to make films, and he made five more.
He was born in Mianeh in 1960 and came up as an assistant to Abbas Kiarostami. His own first feature, The White Balloon, won the Camera d'Or at Cannes in 1995. The Mirror took the Golden Leopard at Locarno in 1997 and The Circle the Golden Lion at Venice in 2000. By his forties he was among the most admired directors working anywhere, and his films were increasingly difficult for the authorities at home.
On 1 March 2010 he was arrested, and on 20 December that year he was sentenced to six years in prison and banned for twenty years from making films, writing screenplays, giving interviews or leaving the country, with exceptions only for pilgrimage or medical treatment. The sentence was upheld on appeal in October 2011. For most directors that is the end of a working life, and it was designed to be.
What he did instead is the whole of his line. In March 2011 he made This Is Not a Film in four days, in his own home, on a camcorder and an iPhone, for about three thousand euros, and it was smuggled out of Iran on a USB drive and announced at Cannes ten days before the festival opened. Closed Curtain followed in 2013, Taxi won the Golden Bear at Berlin in 2015, 3 Faces took the screenplay prize at Cannes in 2018, and No Bears a jury prize at Venice in 2022. He was arrested again on 11 July 2022, his own birthday, began a hunger strike on 1 February 2023 and was released two days later. On 20 May 2025 It Was Just an Accident won the Palme d'Or, shot without permission. A new sentence followed that December and was upheld in June 2026, and he had gone back to Iran in April. His line is worth reading because he keeps going back.
