Who was Fauja Singh?

He could not walk at five, and ran at ninety two.

He said he was born on 1 April 1911, the youngest of four, in a village in Punjab where birth certificates were not typically issued. That is the reason for every qualification on this page: his age could never be checked by anybody else, none of his times were ratified as records, and the widely reported figure of a hundred and fourteen at his death was never accepted by the record keepers. What is not in doubt is the rest of it.

He did not walk until he was five years old. His legs were thin and weak and he could hardly manage any distance, and for the next ten years he was teased and called danda, the Punjabi word for a stick. As a young man he ran as an amateur, and gave it up around the time of the Partition of India.

Then a great deal was taken from him in a short time. His wife died in 1992. His eldest daughter died from complications after giving birth to his third granddaughter. In August 1994 he watched his fifth son, Kuldip, die in a construction accident. In 1995 he went back to running. He emigrated to England in the 1990s and lived with one of his sons in Ilford, and at a claimed eighty nine he took it seriously and began entering international marathons. His London best was six hours and two minutes in 2003, and his marathon best was five hours forty at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon that year, at a claimed ninety two. He beat a long list of age-group records, none of which counted officially. He died in Punjab on 14 July 2025, struck by a vehicle whose driver did not stop.
