The character arc of Ernestine Shepherd
A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record
Born on 16 June 1936 in Baltimore. Between then and now sit years of modelling, a swimsuit tried on with her sister at fifty six that started the whole thing, aerobics classes taken together, competition names chosen for both of them, her sister lost to a brain aneurysm in the early 1990s, a career continued in her memory, the Guinness record as the oldest competitive female bodybuilder in 2010 and 2011, that record passed on in 2012, a book in 2016, and eighty miles of running a week at ninety. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Ernestine Shepherd?
She began at fifty six, and holds the record at ninety.
She was a model in Baltimore for years, and did no serious exercise at all. What started everything was ordinary and slightly comic: at fifty six she and her sister Mildred went to try on swimsuits, looked at themselves, and decided they were out of shape. So they took aerobics classes together. Her sister began competing in bodybuilding shows under the name Velvet, and she followed under the name Ernie.
Then her sister died, in the early 1990s, following a brain aneurysm. She carried on with the bodybuilding partly to remember her. That is the hinge of the whole line: the thing they had started together as a joke about swimsuits became the thing she kept doing for both of them.
The Guinness Book of World Records declared her the oldest competitive female bodybuilder in the world in 2010 and again in 2011, when she was in her mid seventies. The record was taken by another woman in 2012, which she has never treated as a loss. She published a book in 2016, appeared briefly in a well known visual album, and trains under a former Mr Universe. Her routine is not gentle: about eighty miles of running a week and a diet of around seventeen hundred calories, mostly eggs, chicken and vegetables. As of 2025 she was ninety years old and still training, though no longer competing.
The moments
Ernestine Shepherd's timeline.
The 1930s
Born in Baltimore
Everyday. A model, and no exercise to speak of, for the first five decades.
The 1990s
A swimsuit at fifty six
Milestone, and it changed everything. Two sisters, a changing room, and a decision that lasted forty years.
Velvet and Ernie
Milestone, and it changed her direction. They picked stage names for each other and went in together.
Her sister dies
Setback, and it changed everything. The person she started it with was gone, and she kept going for both of them.
Carry on without her sister
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: keep going for both, taken, or let it stop there. She was named the oldest competitive female bodybuilder in the world in 2010 and 2011.
The 2010s
A world record
Milestone, and it changed everything. Seventy four years old, and the oldest competing bodybuilder on earth.
The record passes on
Setback, and it changed her direction. Somebody older came along, which is the best possible way to lose it.
Determined, Dedicated, Disciplined
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Three words for a title, which is also the whole method.
The 2020s
Ninety, and still training
Milestone, and it changed everything. Eighty miles a week, at ninety years old.
Baltimore still sees her out running before most people are awake, at ninety. What it has set moving is the most useful fact in this whole gallery for anybody who thinks they have left it too late: she had done nothing at all until fifty six, and the world record came eighteen years after that.

Your turn
Every line draws a unique story.
Hers did not start until fifty six, and the record came at seventy four. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
