Who is Emily Nagoski?
Dealing with the cause does not finish the stress.
She took her undergraduate degree, a master's in counselling and a doctorate in health behaviour with a minor in human sexuality, all at Indiana University. She was a researcher at the Kinsey Institute and then director of wellness education at Smith College, a post she held for eight years, which is where she learned to explain research to people who had not asked for a lecture.
Her first book came in 2015. Since 2016 she has written and spoken full time, and runs a podcast and a newsletter. Two of her books are sex education, written from the research, and they are named here rather than described.
The book that belongs on this shelf is Burnout, published in 2020 and written with her twin sister Amelia, a doctor of musical arts. Its central idea is a correction almost nobody had been given: dealing with the thing that stressed you does not deal with the stress. The body runs a cycle that has to be completed on its own, by moving or breathing or crying or laughing, and a person who only ever removes the stressor is left carrying the rest. That distinction is the whole book, and it reached an enormous number of people who had assumed they were simply failing at rest. She appeared in a Netflix documentary series, and in 2021 said publicly that she had been diagnosed as autistic.
The moments
Emily Nagoski's timeline.
The 2000s
A doctorate at Indiana
Milestone, and it changed everything. Three degrees at one university, and a doctorate in how people actually behave.
The Kinsey Institute
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Research work at the institute her field was built around.
Eight years at Smith
Milestone, and it changed everything. Eight years explaining research to students who had not asked for a lecture.
The 2010s
A first book
Milestone, and it changed her direction. A first book, written out of the research and the teaching.
Keep the college post, or write
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: write full time, taken, or stay at Smith. Burnout came four years later and reached far more people than the college post ever could.
Writing full time
Milestone, and it changed everything. Out of the college post, and writing for a living.
The 2020s
Burnout
Milestone, and it changed everything. Dealing with the thing that stressed you does not deal with the stress. That distinction is the whole book.
A diagnosis, said out loud
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Said in public, by somebody whose subject is how bodies and minds actually work.
A documentary series
Milestone. The research, taken onto a screen.
A fourth book
Milestone, and it changed her direction. A fourth book, nine years after the first.
The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is one correction, handed to people who thought they were bad at resting: the stress is a cycle in the body, and it has to be finished separately from the thing that caused it.
