Who is Jennifer Doudna?
The Hilo girl who learned to edit life.
She was born in Washington DC in 1964 and grew up in Hilo on the island of Hawaii, where her father taught at the university and where she spent her childhood outdoors, curious about the plants, the lava and the creatures around her. That curiosity was almost talked out of her: a school counsellor told her that girls do not do science, and she has spoken often about how close that came to closing a door. A copy of The Double Helix, left for her to find, did the opposite. It showed her that discovery was something a person could actually do, and she decided it would be her.
She read chemistry at Pomona College and took her doctorate at Harvard, then made her name on the quiet, patient work of RNA structural biology, solving the shape of a ribozyme when almost no one thought it could be done. That grounding is what let her see, years later, what a strange stretch of bacterial DNA called CRISPR might become. In 2012, with the French microbiologist Emmanuelle Charpentier, she showed that the CRISPR-Cas9 system could be programmed to cut DNA at a chosen place, a way to edit the code of living things.
What followed was a revolution in biology, and she did not leave the questions it raised to others. She helped gather scientists to debate the ethics of editing human genes, urged care and openness rather than a race, and founded the Innovative Genomics Institute to steer the work toward good. In 2020 she and Charpentier shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the first two women to share it. Her line is worth reading because the curiosity of a Hilo child, once nearly waved away, reached all the way to the editing of life itself.
