Who is Arnold Schwarzenegger?
Told his name was wrong, he made it the marquee.
He grew up in Thal, a small Austrian village with no plumbing for much of his childhood, and he settled early on a single idea: to become the best built man in the world and to do it in America. He served in the Austrian army at eighteen and, the story goes, slipped away from the barracks to win a junior title before he was allowed leave. At twenty he was the youngest ever Mr. Universe. In October 1968 he arrived in the United States with very little, and by 1970 he had the first of seven Mr. Olympia titles.
The turn most people forget is that he walked away from the sport he ruled to gamble on films, a business that told him his name, his accent and his build were all wrong for it. He kept going anyway, the way he had trained: through the reps, past the people who said no. Conan carried a picture in 1982, and The Terminator made him one of the biggest names in the world in 1984. Later he was twice elected governor of California, and after that he went back to work in film.
He is blunt about how none of it was solo. In his 2009 commencement address at the University of Southern California he told graduates not to call him the self-made man, because when he arrived with nothing, other people fed him, housed him and coached him, and none of us gets there alone. The mindset he preaches is plainer still: do not be afraid to fail, work like hell, and give something back. His line is worth reading because he treated the word no as a starting gun, and because it is still moving.

Setback. He revealed a pacemaker had been fitted for a genetic heart condition, and kept working.
The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end.
