Who is Brendan Fraser?
The phone stopped ringing. Then he told everybody why.
His parents were Canadian, his father a former journalist working as a foreign service officer for a government tourism office, and the family moved constantly: Eureka in California, Seattle, Ottawa, the Netherlands, Switzerland. On a holiday in London he was taken to his first professional theatre show in the West End, and that is the thing he points at. He took a fine arts degree at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle in 1990, planned on a masters, visited Hollywood instead and stayed.
It went fast. A small part in 1991, a first lead in Encino Man in 1992 and School Ties the same year, George of the Jungle in 1997, and then The Mummy in 1999, which made him one of the biggest film stars of the decade. In between he took the work that was not commercial, Gods and Monsters in 1998 opposite Ian McKellen, and got the reviews of his life for it. By 2001 he was a franchise.
In 2003, at an industry luncheon, the president of the body that votes for the Golden Globes assaulted him. Fraser said nothing publicly for fifteen years. The man later wrote in his own memoir that he had done it in jest. What followed in Fraser's life was a divorce announced in 2007, the physical bill for years of doing his own stunts, and then his mother's death in 2016.
The surgery is worth listing because the work depended on his body: a partial knee replacement, a laminectomy, and an operation on his vocal cords, across about seven years. The films stopped performing, the offers thinned, and by the early 2010s a man who had opened blockbusters was largely off the screen. He put it plainly himself: the phone does stop ringing, and you start asking yourself why.
In 2018 he gave an interview in which he set out the assault, the years after it, and his own suspicion about what the silence had cost him. Four years later Darren Aronofsky cast him in The Whale, having looked for that actor for a decade and decided after seeing him in the trailer of a low-budget film. It premiered at Venice in September 2022 to a six minute standing ovation, and in March 2023 he won the Academy Award for Best Actor.
