Who is Anoushka Shankar?
She was handed the instrument, and took it somewhere else.
Her father was Ravi Shankar, who was sixty one when she was born in London in 1981. She began sitar training at eight, with Gaurav Mazumdar, and from ten she sat beside her father on stage playing the tanpura, which is the drone underneath everything. On 27 February 1995, aged thirteen, she gave her first public sitar performance at Siri Fort in New Delhi, with the tabla player Zakir Hussain. In 1998, at sixteen, she signed to Angel and released her debut album.
Being handed the most famous name in your instrument is not only a gift. Everything she played would be measured against him, and the safe route was to guard the tradition exactly as received. She did not take it. Breathing Under Water, in 2007, was made with Karsh Kale. Traveller, in 2011, put the sitar against flamenco, which are two traditions that turn out to share a grandparent. She has recorded with Herbie Hancock and Sting.
Ravi Shankar died in December 2012, five weeks after his final concert on 4 November. She has received fourteen Grammy Award nominations and was the first musician of Indian origin to perform live at the ceremony and to present at it. Since 2023 she has released three connected records: Chapter I in 2023, Chapter II in 2024 and Chapter III in 2025, and she appeared on the Gorillaz album The Mountain in 2026. Her line is worth reading for the fourteen, and for the fact that she kept going past every one of them.
