ruminare, to chew again what was already swallowed
Rumination
Replaying a conversation is not processing it. The second pass adds no information and reinforces the pathway.
What is rumination?
Rumination is replaying something that is already over. The Latin ruminare describes a cow bringing food back up to chew a second time, and the word arrived in English to describe exactly what your mind does at two in the morning. It is not thinking. It is chewing.
Why it works
The first pass through a difficult memory is processing, and it does real work. Every pass after that adds no new information, because no new information has arrived. What it does instead is strengthen the neural pathway, which is why the thought gets easier to reach each time you take it. You are not solving it. You are practising it.
How to use it
You notice you are replaying the meeting again. Ask one question: is there an action here, or only a feeling? If there is an action, write it down and the loop usually stops, because the loop was trying to hand you something. If there is only a feeling, name it, and give it somewhere to go that is not another lap.
What proving it looks like
"Caught the third replay of the same conversation, wrote the one sentence I actually needed to say, and it stopped. 19 Feb."
Where this lands
The moment a loop breaks is worth marking, because loops rarely break loudly.
