invertere, to turn upside down
Inversion
Instead of asking how to succeed, ask what would guarantee failure, then refuse to do those things.
What is inversion?
Inversion is asking the question backwards. Instead of what would make this work, ask what would guarantee it fails, then systematically refuse to do those things. The Latin invertere means to turn upside down, and that is the whole method.
Why it works
Forward thinking asks you to imagine a future that does not exist yet, which your brain is genuinely bad at. Backward thinking asks you to recognise failure, which you have seen many times and can describe in detail. You are swapping a prediction problem, where you are unreliable, for a recognition problem, where you are good.
How to use it
You want the relationship to work. Ask what would reliably destroy it: contempt, keeping score, going silent for days, being right more often than being kind. You already know the list. Avoiding the obvious disaster outperforms chasing the clever move far more often than anyone admits.
What proving it looks like
"Wrote the four things that would end this, then stopped doing the second one. 2 Apr."
Where this lands
Avoided disasters do not feel like achievements, which is exactly why they need a line to appear on.
This is one of the ideas inside Character Arc. See where it lands on your own line.
