Guide

How to stop overthinking.

Overthinking is a loop rather than a process: the second pass over a worry adds no information the first pass did not have, and each replay makes the next one easier to fall into. It breaks when the thought is given somewhere to end, on paper, with the decision it belongs to.

What is actually happening

Replaying a conversation is not processing it. The brain treats the rehearsal as useful because it feels like preparation, but the information is unchanged after the first pass, and the pathway gets a little deeper each time it runs. That is rumination, and it is ordinary machinery rather than a character flaw.

Fear does something similar with the future: it predicts a cost using a price list that has usually already changed. The conversation you are dreading was priced by a version of you from years ago.

Three things that actually interrupt it

Name the loop while it is running. Noticing "this is the fourth pass and nothing new has arrived" is not a trick; it is the only move that works from inside, because a loop survives on not being seen.

Write the thought down where it will be waiting. Half of what a loop is doing is making sure you do not forget. Give it a place to sit and it stops asking.

Convert it into a decision or a rep. If there is something to choose, lay the paths out. If there is something to do, do one small version of it once. Both give the loop an ending it cannot argue with.

Why doing beats deciding to feel differently

You cannot reason your way out of a prediction. You can only collect evidence against it, which is why one real action beats a week of thinking about the action. Do the thing once, write down how it actually felt, and the prediction has to answer to something.

Frequently Asked Questions

More of what people ask.

Why do I keep replaying conversations?
Because the replay feels like preparation. The second pass adds no information the first did not have, and the pathway deepens each time, so the loop keeps its own momentum going long after it has stopped being useful.
What is the difference between overthinking and thinking?
New information. Thinking moves something forward; overthinking runs the same material again. If the fourth pass has told you nothing the first did not, you are no longer thinking about it.
Does writing it down really help?
It removes the job the loop has taken on, which is making sure you do not forget. A thought with a place to wait tends to stop interrupting, and the written version is usually smaller than the rehearsed one.
How does Character Arc help with overthinking?
It gives the thought somewhere to end. A decision becomes a crossroads with paths and a due date; a fear becomes a quest you do once and record how it felt. Both replace rehearsal with something that actually happened.
