The character arc of Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Born 3 October 1981 in Malmö and raised in Rosengård, an immigrant quarter of the city. Between then and now sit a childhood among neighbours from everywhere, a debut for Malmö FF, a move to Ajax, league titles won in four countries, a night of four goals against England, a serious knee injury answered with a comeback, a league title at forty, and a farewell at San Siro. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Zlatan Ibrahimovic?
The Rosengård boy who played like a king.
He was born in Malmö in 1981 and grew up in Rosengård, a district where neighbours came from many countries and money was short. Football was the thing that was his, played on hard courts and in the street long before it was played in a stadium, and he had a way with the ball that nobody could quite teach and nobody could quite take from him. He made his debut for Malmö FF as a teenager, and by 2001 he had moved to Ajax, the first stop on a career that would carry him across Europe.
The line then climbs through some of the biggest clubs in the game. He won league titles in the Netherlands, in Italy, in Spain and in France, moving between Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, and everywhere he went he scored the kind of goals people replayed for years. In November 2012 he scored four against England in a single match, the last of them an overhead strike from well outside the box that is still shown as one of the finest goals ever scored. He became Sweden's all-time leading scorer, the face of his country's game.
The line does not run straight up. In 2017, at Manchester United and thirty five, he tore knee ligaments in a way that ends most careers, and he answered it not by stopping but by rebuilding and playing on. He went to LA Galaxy, returned to AC Milan, and in 2022, at forty, won a league title again. He said goodbye at San Siro in 2023 after more than twenty years and over five hundred career goals. His line is worth reading because the boy from Rosengård never once played smaller than he believed he was.
