Who is Yulimar Rojas?
The coastal girl who jumped into history.
She was born in Caracas in 1995 and grew up on the coast in Puerto La Cruz, one of several children in a modest home, tall for her age and drawn first to volleyball. Athletics came later, and once it did the triple jump found her: the long, three-beat run and leap that rewards height, rhythm and nerve. She rose quickly, and by her early twenties she was on the world stage, taking Olympic silver at Rio in 2016 and a first global title indoors the same year.
What followed was one of the most complete runs the event has seen. She won world titles outdoors and indoors, became the first triple jumper to take three world indoor crowns, and pushed the record further with each season. The summit came in Tokyo on 1 August 2021, where she jumped 15.67 metres to win Venezuela's first Olympic gold medal in athletics and break a world record that had stood for twenty six years. Months later she jumped further still, 15.74 metres indoors in Belgrade.
The line does not run straight up. In 2024 she ruptured her Achilles tendon in training, an injury that kept her from defending her Olympic title, and the surgery and recovery took the better part of two years. What she did with it is the point of her arc: rather than let it be the ending, she made it a chapter, returning to a world final in 2025 for a bronze and then a silver indoors in 2026. Her line is worth reading because the record it reached is only one dot on it, and the line is climbing again.

Olympic silver in Rio
Milestone. At her first Olympic Games she took the triple jump silver medal, announcing herself to the world.
First world outdoor title
Milestone. She won her first outdoor world title in London, the start of a long reign over the event.
Gold in Doha
Milestone. A second outdoor world title in Doha confirmed her as the finest triple jumper of her generation.
The 2020s
World record, Olympic gold
Milestone, and it changed everything. She jumped 15.67 metres in Tokyo to win Venezuela's first Olympic athletics gold and break a record that had stood since 1995.
World record indoors again
Milestone, and it changed her direction. In Belgrade she jumped 15.74 metres, a third world indoor title and the first triple jumper to win three.
A fourth world title
Milestone. She took her fourth outdoor world title in Budapest, extending one of the most complete runs the event has seen.
The Achilles gives way
Setback, and it changed everything. A ruptured Achilles tendon in training required surgery and kept her from defending her Olympic title, the hardest chapter of her line.
Retire, or rebuild again
