Who is Yuja Wang?

She was born in Beijing in 1987 to a percussionist father and a dancer mother, and began piano at six. A prodigy from the start, she trained in the Chinese conservatory system and, from the age of eleven, spent summers studying in the West at the Morningside Music Bridge in Calgary. At fifteen she entered the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studied for five years with Gary Graffman and graduated in 2008, the technique that would astonish audiences already close to complete.
The line turns sharply upward in March 2007. When Martha Argerich cancelled her concerts with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the twenty year old Wang was asked to step in and play Tchaikovsky at only days' notice. She said yes, walked on, and the whole music world heard her at once. What followed was not a single night but a career: a contract with Deutsche Grammophon in 2009, seasons opening the great orchestras, and a reputation for playing the hardest music in the repertoire with a speed and freedom few could match.
