Who is Trevor Noah?

He was born in Johannesburg in 1984 to a Black Xhosa mother, Patricia, and a white Swiss father, at a time when a relationship between them was a crime under apartheid. His very existence was evidence of that crime, which is the title he later gave the memoir: Born a Crime. He grew up poor, moving between Soweto and Eden Park, raised largely by a mother whose faith and nerve he credits for almost everything that followed.
The line does not run straight up. In 2009 his stepfather shot his mother Patricia. She survived, against the odds, and Noah has written and spoken about the fear and the anger of it plainly, always returning to her strength rather than the violence. He kept working: a cameo on South African television in 2002, his own radio show, his own late-night show, then a debut on American television in 2012 and a move that few saw coming.
In September 2015 he took over The Daily Show from Jon Stewart, a young South African comedian handed one of the most watched desks in American media, and held it for seven years. In 2016 he published Born a Crime, which became a bestseller and is now read in classrooms. His line is worth reading because the fact that was meant to be a mark against him, the circumstances of his birth, is the fact he chose to build his whole story upon.
