The character arc of Tope Awotona

Born on 4 May 1981 in Lagos, Nigeria, and raised through a childhood cut short when his father was killed. His family emigrated to the United States, where he took a business degree, learned to sell, and watched three of his own ventures fail. In 2013 he put his savings into a scheduling tool called Calendly, ran it lean for years before any outside money, and built it into a company worth billions and used the world over. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Tope Awotona?

The founder who bet on solving his own problem.

He was born in Lagos in 1981 and grew up watching his father, a microbiologist and entrepreneur, run businesses on the side. That start was broken early: his father was killed in a carjacking when Tope was a boy, and his mother made the decision to move the family to the United States, settling near Atlanta, Georgia. He finished high school young, went to the University of Georgia, and came out with a degree in business and a plan to make his own way.

He learned to sell first, in corporate sales roles at companies including IBM and EMC, and he kept trying to start something of his own. Three ideas came and went: a dating site, a business selling projectors, and one selling grills, each chasing a market rather than a real need. The lesson he took from all three was that he had been building for the money instead of for a problem he actually had. When he found a problem he lived every week, the endless back and forth of booking a meeting, he built the answer to it.

In 2013 he put his own savings into Calendly and went into debt to keep it alive, running it lean for years while outside investors passed. He has spoken about the bias he met as a Black founder raising money, and about how the company reached profitability before it took a cent from anyone. When the funding finally came it came fast, and by 2021 Calendly was valued in the billions and used by millions of people in more than two hundred countries. His arc is worth reading because the bet that looked reckless was really patience: years of quiet building before the world caught up.
