The character arc of Tom Scott
A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record
Born in 1984 or 1985 and raised in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Between then and now sit a linguistics degree at York, a research master's in educational studies, the British section of Talk Like a Pirate Day organised from 2003, a students' union election won as a joke in 2008, a YouTube channel opened in 2006 that went nowhere for eight years, a run of weekly videos from 2014 that lasted a decade, a deliberate stop in January 2024, and a return in March 2026. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Tom Scott?
Ten years without missing a week, and then he stopped.
He grew up in Mansfield, took a degree in linguistics and English language at the University of York, and then a two-year part-time research master's in educational studies. He first came to any kind of public notice as a student by building a parody of a government website. From 2003 he organised the British section of Talk Like a Pirate Day, and in 2008 his friends nominated him to stand for students' union president in the persona he had built for it. He ran as a joke, took almost three thousand votes, won, and then had to do the job.
He opened a YouTube channel in 2006 and it did very little for eight years. What changed was not the idea but the discipline: from 2014 he made the educational series Things You Might Not Know and kept going, week after week, across linguistics, computing, geography, history and science. Other series followed, Language Files, The Basics, Amazing Places, a brain-teaser podcast, and comedy with a group of friends. By April 2026 his five channels had over eight million subscribers and two billion views between them. The videos are plainly made, well researched and almost never about him.
The interesting decision came at the end of the run. In January 2024 he stopped the weekly schedule he had kept for a decade, deliberately, to work on other things. Nobody makes that choice when the thing is working, and he made it anyway. He came back to weekly uploads in March 2026 with an unscripted series about England, which is a different kind of programme from the one he had been making for ten years.
The moments
Tom Scott's timeline.
The 2000s
Linguistics at York
Everyday. Linguistics, which explains a good deal about the videos.
Talk Like a Pirate Day
Milestone. A daft job nobody was paying for, taken seriously.
The channel opens
Milestone, and it changed his direction. Opened in 2006, and then very little happened for eight years.
He wins as a joke
Milestone, and it changed everything. He stood for a laugh, won, and then had to actually run the place.
The 2010s
Things You Might Not Know
Milestone, and it changed everything. Eight years in, he found the format and never changed it again.
Four more series
Milestone, and it changed his direction. Five channels, several series, and the same plain manner in all of them.
The 2020s
Stop the weekly video
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: break the run, taken, or keep the streak. He returned to weekly uploads in March 2026 with an unscripted series he had not made before.
He stops the weekly run
Milestone, and it changed everything. Ten years of never missing a week, ended by choice while it was working.
Back, with something new
Milestone, and it changed his direction. Back on the weekly schedule, with a format he had never tried.
A camera, a place worth explaining and about eight minutes is still the whole format. What it has set moving is a standard rather than a style: an enormous number of people who now expect an internet video to be researched, fair and finished, because for a decade one arrived every week that was.
Your turn
Every line draws a unique story.
His kept one promise every week for ten years and then chose to break the pattern. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
