Who is Thuso Mbedu?

Six months with no work, and then she led it.

She was born in Pietermaritzburg to a Zulu mother and a father of Sotho and Xhosa descent, and both her parents died when she was young. Her grandmother raised her and became her legal guardian. She went to the local primary and girls' high schools, took a course at an acting studio in New York in 2012, and graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2013 with honours in physical theatre and performing arts management.

The work started small: a minor part in a soap in late 2014, a role as a journalism student in another, a guest part in a teen drama, a lead in a further series. Then six months with no work at all, which is the part of an acting career nobody puts on a poster. What ended it was Is'Thunzi, a teen drama that premiered in October 2016 and gave her a first starring role. She has said she had a panic attack while filming one of its hardest scenes. In September 2017 she was nominated for an International Emmy for it, the only African nominated that year, and she was nominated again in 2018.

In 2021 she played Cora in an American limited series adapted from a prize-winning novel, which made her the first South African actor to lead an American television series and brought her an Independent Spirit Award, a Gotham Award and a critics' association award. Her feature film debut followed in 2022, opposite Viola Davis in a historical epic about the Kingdom of Dahomey. She became a beauty brand's ambassador for sub-Saharan Africa in 2023, narrated a documentary piece the same year, and in January 2025 was reported as cast in the lead of a major fantasy adaptation.

The moments

Thuso Mbedu's timeline.

The 1990s

8 Jul 1991

Born in Pietermaritzburg

Everyday. Three languages in one family, in KwaZulu-Natal.

~1996

Her grandmother takes over

Setback, and it changed everything. Both parents gone early, and a grandmother who stepped in.

The 2010s

~2012

A course in New York

Milestone, and it changed her direction. A summer in a New York acting studio, a long way from Pelham.

~2013

A degree with honours

Milestone, and it changed her direction. Physical theatre, which is the training you do when you mean it.

~2014

Small parts

Milestone. Four jobs, none of them the one that changes anything.

~2016

Six months with nothing

Setback, and it changed everything. Six months of no work at all, with a degree and four credits behind her.

1 Jun 2016

Keep going after six months

Crossroads, decided.

The paths laid out: stay in the auditions, taken, or use the other degree. Is'Thunzi gave her a first lead and two International Emmy nominations, and an American series followed in 2021.

Oct 2016

Is'Thunzi

Milestone, and it changed everything. The first lead, and it asked a great deal of her.

Sep 2017

An International Emmy nomination

Milestone, and it changed everything. The only African on the list, two years running.

The 2020s

Pietermaritzburg raised her and her grandmother did the rest, and she says both out loud. What it has set moving is a door that was shut: no South African had ever led an American television series, and the next one who does will not be the first.

Your turn

Every line draws a unique story.

Hers had six months of nothing in the middle and an American lead at the end of it. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
