Who is The Weeknd?

He was born Abel Tesfaye in Toronto in 1990, to parents who had come from Ethiopia, and grew up in the east end of the city. As a teenager he dropped out of school and left home, and the years that followed were lean and uncertain. What he had was songs, and a decision about how to share them: he posted them online with no face and no name, under the words The Weeknd, and let people find the music before they could find him.
The anonymous uploads became House of Balloons in 2011, a free mixtape that critics and listeners chased without knowing who had made it. From there the line climbs steadily: a first studio album, then Beauty Behind the Madness in 2015 with its first chart-topping songs, then After Hours in 2020, whose single Blinding Lights ran so long and so high that Billboard later named it the biggest Hot 100 song in the chart's history. In 2021 he sang alone in a lit stadium at the Super Bowl halftime, the boy who once hid his face now the whole show.
The line does not run only up. He built the After Hours, Dawn FM and Hurry Up Tomorrow records into one three-album story and closed it in 2025, and along the way he stopped a sold-out concert when his voice gave out mid-song, apologised, and came back to finish it later.
