Who is Stromae?
The Brussels boy who made honest songs dance.
He was born Paul Van Haver in Etterbeek, near Brussels, in 1985, and took the stage name Stromae, a playful reversing of the word maestro. His family history carries an early loss: his father, the Rwandan architect Pierre Rutare, was killed in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, a fact he has spoken about with care. Music was where the boy put the rest into words, and in 2009 Alors on Danse turned a home-made electronic track into a number one across Europe and the first dot on a line the whole continent would soon follow.
In 2013 the album Racine Carree reached far past Europe, selling in the millions and sending Papaoutai and Formidable around the world. What set his work apart was the pairing: bright, danceable production carrying honest and often heavy subjects, so that a crowd could move and feel the weight of a song at the same time. Then, in 2015, in the middle of a long tour, his health took a bad turn. An anti-malaria medicine he had taken on the road affected his sleep, and he chose to step back at the very height of his fame rather than push on.
The pause was not empty. He and his wife Coralie Barbier built the design house Mosaert, and he kept shaping images and directing, working in a quieter register while he recovered. In 2022 he returned with the album Multitude, writing openly about the years he had been through, and the line that had run flat for a while climbed again. His arc is worth reading because the dip in the middle is the honest part: he treated his health as the thing worth protecting, and the story kept going because of it, not in spite of it.
