She was born Sng Ee Tze in Singapore in 1978 and studied marketing at Nanyang Technological University, singing on the side while she finished her degree. In 2000 her debut album Yan Zi arrived and did not stay quiet: its single Cloudy Day carried her across Taiwan, mainland China, Hong Kong and Malaysia, and within a year she had won the Golden Melody Award for Best New Artist. A girl next door voice, plain and unforced, had become one of the defining sounds of Mandopop.
The line climbed through the decade that followed. She sang two National Day Parade theme songs for Singapore, took the Golden Melody Award for Best Mandarin Female Singer in 2005, and had an orchid named after her at home.
