Who is Shakira?
Kept out of the choir, and she made the world sing along.
She was born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll in Barranquilla, on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, to a Colombian mother and a father of Lebanese descent. She was writing songs by ten and knew early that she wanted to sing. The story she still tells is that as a young child a music teacher kept her out of the school choir, saying her vibrato was too strong. Her father told her to ignore it and keep the voice that was hers, and she did.
The climb did not run straight up. Signed at thirteen, she made two albums, Magia in 1991 and Peligro in 1993, that barely sold, the first only about a thousand copies at home. Rather than quit, she took control of the writing and reworked her sound, blending rock, Latin pop and the Arabic influences of her heritage, and in 1995 Pies Descalzos broke through and sold millions across Latin America. Laundry Service and Whenever, Wherever carried her worldwide in 2001, and Hips Don't Lie, the World Cup anthem Waka Waka and the Super Bowl stage followed.
While her music grew she built something to outlast it. In 1997 she started the Pies Descalzos Foundation, which runs schools that feed and teach children in some of the poorest parts of Colombia. Her line is worth reading because the thing that was supposed to end it, a teacher deciding her voice did not belong, is the thing the whole world now knows her by.
