The character arc of Serge Ibaka

Born 18 September 1989 in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, one of eighteen children. Between then and now sit a hard childhood, a departure for Europe alone at seventeen, a place in the 2008 draft, two seasons as the best shot blocker in the NBA, gold with Spain, a night in the Finals that fell short, an NBA title with Toronto in 2019, and a foundation built for children back home. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Serge Ibaka?

One of eighteen, a world champion.

He was born in Brazzaville in 1989, one of eighteen children in a basketball family, and grew up through years of civil war that scattered the household and left him without an easy road out. The way out he found was the game his parents had both played. At seventeen he left the Congo on his own for Europe, first for France and then for a club in Spain, carrying almost nothing but the belief that the court could take him somewhere his birthplace could not.

Oklahoma City drafted him with the twenty fourth pick in 2008, and within a few seasons he was the most feared shot blocker in the league, leading the NBA in blocks in 2011-12 and again the season after, and named to the All-Defensive First Team three years running. The line does not run straight up. In 2012 he reached the NBA Finals with the Thunder and lost, one of the setbacks that told him a great defence was not yet a ring, and he kept building his game outward from it.

The climb was answered in June 2019, when he won the NBA championship with the Toronto Raptors, a title carried home to a whole country. He plays internationally for Spain, with whom he took EuroBasket gold in 2011, and away from the court his foundation has fed and backed children in the Congo and in the cities he has played in. His line is worth reading because the boy who left Brazzaville alone did not arrive already a champion. He became one, dot by dot.
