Who is Sal Khan?
One cousin needed help, and he taught everybody else too.
He was born in Louisiana in 1976. His father had come from Bangladesh and his mother from India, his father left when he was young, and he was brought up by his mother on her own. He was very good at school and went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he took three degrees by 1998, and then an MBA at Harvard in 2003. He became an analyst at a hedge fund in Boston, which is the point at which the story would ordinarily stop being interesting.
In August 2004 his cousin Nadia, who was in New Orleans, was struggling with unit conversion. He started tutoring her after work, over the telephone and a shared drawing program. She improved, word went round the family, and he ended up tutoring a handful of cousins at once. Scheduling all of them became impossible, so in 2006 he began recording the lessons and putting them on YouTube, mostly so his relatives could watch them whenever they wanted. Strangers found them. He incorporated Khan Academy as a non-profit in 2008.
In 2009 he left the hedge fund to work on it without a salary, which for a man with a family and a Harvard MBA was not a small thing, and in 2010 Google and the Gates Foundation funded it. It has since reached tens of millions of people and remains free. He opened a school in 2014, launched an artificial intelligence tutor called Khanmigo in 2023 and wrote a book about it in 2024. In April 2026 he said publicly that the first version of Khanmigo had not changed student learning as much as he had wanted, and rebuilt it, and in the same month announced a degree with TED and ETS costing ten thousand dollars. His line is worth reading because he could have charged for any of it and did not.
