Who is Rosalía?
The conservatory student who made flamenco new.
She was born in 1992 in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, a town near Barcelona, and she has said that she knew her path at thirteen, when she heard flamenco coming from a car near her school. What followed was not a shortcut. She earned a place at the Catalonia College of Music, where flamenco takes one student a year, and studied cante for years under the flamenco veteran known as El Chiqui, singing in bars and tablaos around the city while she learned the old rhythms, the technique and the feeling the form demands.
The line turns on what she did with that training. For her graduation thesis she built a concept album, El Mal Querer, drawn from a thirteenth century story, and released it in 2018. It set the discipline of traditional flamenco against modern pop and production, and it worked: it made her a global star, won the Latin Grammy for Album of the Year, and brought her a first Grammy the following year. She had not abandoned the tradition. She had studied it long enough to carry it somewhere new.
Since then the line has kept climbing. Motomami, in 2022, won the Latin Grammy for Album of the Year again and a second Grammy, and in 2025 she released Lux, an orchestral album recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra, before beginning a global tour in 2026. Her line is worth reading because the leap that made her famous was not luck. It rested on years of quiet study, and the respect she keeps saying she owes the art she learned.
