Who is Roberto Duran?
The boy from El Chorrillo, Hands of Stone.
He was born in Guarare in 1951 and grew up in El Chorrillo, one of the poorest districts of Panama City, where as a boy he shined shoes, sold fruit and newspapers, and learned to fight in the street long before he learned to fight in a ring. He turned professional at sixteen, and the power in his hands earned him the name that followed him everywhere: Manos de Piedra, Hands of Stone. By 1972 he had taken the lightweight championship of the world from Ken Buchanan, and he held that division as one of the most feared fighters ever to make the weight.
The line does not run straight up. In June 1980 he moved up to welterweight and beat Sugar Ray Leonard over fifteen rounds in Montreal, one of the great nights of the sport. Five months later, in the New Orleans rematch, he walked away in the eighth round, and that night followed him for years as the one people would not let him forget. What he did with it is the point of his arc: rather than let it be the ending, he made it a chapter, and kept climbing.
He won world titles in four weight divisions, capped in 1989 when, at thirty seven, he beat Iran Barkley for the middleweight crown in a fight named the year's best. He boxed on into his fifties, was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2007, and is honoured at home as a living national treasure. His line is worth reading because the night that was meant to define him is only one dot on it, and the line kept rising for twenty years after.
