Who is Rick Rubin?
The producer who made less into more.
He grew up on Long Beach in New York and went to New York University, where a love of punk and the new sound of hip-hop met a knack for hearing what a song wanted to be. From his dorm room he began putting out singles, and in 1984, with Russell Simmons, he turned that into Def Jam. Within two years the Beastie Boys and Run-DMC had carried hip-hop out of the clubs and onto the widest stages, and a college side project had become one of the most important labels in music.
In 1988 he did the harder thing: he left the label he had built and started over, founding Def American in Los Angeles. What followed was a career with no single lane. He produced the Red Hot Chili Peppers, worked across metal and rock, and in 1994 sat Johnny Cash down with a guitar and a microphone and let a fading legend be heard plainly again. That first American Recordings album began one of the great late-career revivals, and it showed what his whole method was for.
His way of working is the point of his arc. He is not a musician in the room so much as a listener, stripping a song back until only the true part is left, trusting the artist and trusting silence. He carried that from co-heading Columbia to a media world of his own in Tetragrammaton, and in 2023 he set it all down in The Creative Act, a book that argues creativity is not a rare gift but a birthright.
