The character arc of Pita Taufatofua

Born 5 November 1983 in Brisbane of Tongan heritage. Between then and now sit years of trying and failing to reach the Olympics in taekwondo, the night he carried Tonga's flag into Rio, a decision to learn cross-country skiing from nothing and qualify within a year, a return on the taekwondo mat at Tokyo, and hundreds of thousands raised for Tonga after disaster struck home. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Pita Taufatofua?

The man who carried Tonga into both Olympics.

He was born in Brisbane in 1983 of Tongan heritage, and for a long time his Olympic dream looked like a closed door. He battled through cycle after cycle trying to qualify in taekwondo, coming up short each time, until at Rio 2016 he finally became Tonga's first Olympic taekwondo competitor. He was chosen to carry the flag, and the sight of him leading his nation into the stadium in a traditional taovala, oiled and beaming, was seen around the world. The joy of it, after so many years of failing, was the whole point.

Rather than let one Games be the ending, he set himself a stranger goal: to reach a Winter Olympics in a sport he had never done. He had barely seen snow. With none in Tonga and none near his Brisbane base, he trained by running the sand dunes with planks strapped to his feet and studying races on video, and on the final day of the qualification period, in Iceland, he made it. At PyeongChang 2018 he skied the fifteen kilometres and finished, becoming the only Tongan ever to appear at both a Summer and a Winter Games.

His line kept widening past his own sport. He returned to carry the flag and compete again in taekwondo at Tokyo, and when a volcanic eruption and tsunami struck Tonga in January 2022 he set up a fundraiser that drew hundreds of thousands for the islands, for schools and hospitals and the people most in need. A UNICEF ambassador who speaks to young people about perseverance, he was chosen again in 2026 to carry the Olympic flag. His line is worth reading because it is built almost entirely of nights he was not favoured to have, and he had them anyway.

Your turn

Every story draws a unique line.

His is four decades in and still being drawn. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about three minutes.
