Who is Peter Sagan?
The boy from Žilina who made racing look like joy.
He grew up in Žilina in northern Slovakia, the youngest of four, riding a sister's bike before he had one of his own, and good on it at everything: mountain bike, cyclocross and road. As a junior he won two world titles across disciplines, and he arrived in the professional peloton as a teenager who could sprint, climb a little, handle a bike like an acrobat, and win on the roughest days. Almost at once he was winning stages of the biggest races, and doing it with a wheelie or a grin that told you he was enjoying himself.
His signature became the Tour de France green jersey, the prize for the sport's best all-round fast man across three weeks of racing. He won it seven times, a record no one else holds, because he could take a flat sprint, an uphill finish and a broken cobbled stage all in the same July. Then from 2015 he did something no rider had done: he won the world road race championship three years running, in Richmond, Doha and Bergen, the rainbow jersey on his back for three straight seasons. He added the two hardest one-day races of all, the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.
What set him apart was not only the winning but the way he carried it: generous to rivals, funny in interviews, a showman who popped wheelies over finish lines and made a hard sport look like play. A heart procedure in 2024 closed his racing chapter and he stepped away with his family and his health in front of him. His line is worth reading because it climbs as high as the sport goes and stays warm the whole way up, proof that you can be the fiercest competitor in the race and the most loved man in it at the same time.
