The character arc of Payal Kadakia
Born 2 February 1983 in New Jersey. Between then and now sit a childhood spent dancing, a degree from MIT, a safe corporate start she walked away from, a dance company built on the side, a search tool that almost no one used, the pivot that turned it into ClassPass, a billion dollar valuation, an acquisition, and a book. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Payal Kadakia?
A dancer who left the safe path, then she built ClassPass.
She grew up in New Jersey, the daughter of Gujarati immigrants, and found dance early. Indian classical and folk forms filled her afternoons and weekends, and the stage became the place she felt most herself. She was also good with numbers, good enough to study operations research and economics at MIT, and after graduating she stepped straight onto the corporate path, first as a consultant at Bain and Company, then in digital strategy at a music company. On paper it was the safe life. Underneath it, the pull toward dance never left.
In 2008 she started the Sa Dance Company so that Indian dance could be seen on mainstream stages, and running it in her spare time showed her how hard it was for anyone to find a class and simply show up. That problem became a business. In 2010 she left the safe job and built Classtivity, a tool to search and book fitness and dance classes. It started slowly, so slowly that almost no one booked. Rather than fold, she and her team rebuilt the idea around one membership that opened many studios, and in 2013 it became ClassPass.
ClassPass grew into a membership used in cities across the world, reached a valuation of a billion dollars, and in 2021 was acquired by Mindbody. Along the way she handed the chief executive role to someone else and moved to chairman, choosing the part of the work she was best at over the title she had held. In 2022 she wrote LifePass, a book about setting goals from what you love rather than what you fear. She still leads the Sa Dance Company, and her line is worth reading because the slow start was the middle of it, not the end.

Success happens on your own timeline, not anyone else's.
A fulfilled life will always trump anything else.
Your turn
Every story draws a unique line.
Hers is more than four decades in and still being drawn. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about three minutes.
