Who is Pavel Durov?
The coder who would not hand over the keys.
He was born in Leningrad in 1984 into a family of scholars and spent years of his childhood in Italy before returning to St Petersburg, where he studied and learned to code. At twenty one he launched VKontakte, VK, which grew into the largest social network in the Russian-speaking world and made him, still in his twenties, one of the most watched founders in the country. He built it fast and he built it his way, and that habit of independence became the spine of everything that followed.
In 2013 he and his brother Nikolai launched Telegram, a messaging app built around encryption and funded from his own pocket rather than by outside owners. The next year the two stories collided: pressed to hand over data on protest organisers, he refused, was removed as head of VK, sold his stake and left Russia. He carried Telegram with him, moved its small team through several cities and settled it in Dubai, keeping it independent of the governments that had leaned on him and of the advertising model that trades in data.
Telegram kept growing, past 500 million accounts in 2021 and past a billion by 2025, one of the most used messaging apps in the world. In August 2024 he was detained near Paris as French investigators questioned the platform's moderation, a case he called unfair and that Telegram said it answers by abiding by the law; France lifted his travel restrictions in November 2025. His line is worth reading because the choice that shaped it, to leave rather than comply, was made young and lived out in public for more than a decade.
