Who is Park Chan-wook?
The critic who became a master of the frame.
He studied philosophy at Sogang University in Seoul, where he was more drawn to the cinema than to his own department, so he founded the university film club and began writing about the movies he loved. He meant to be a critic, and for years he was one. Seeing Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo settled the matter another way: he decided he had to make films himself, and set out to learn the craft from the ground up.
The line does not run straight up. His 1992 debut, The Moon Is the Sun's Dream, and his 1997 comedy, Trio, both failed at the box office, and the years between them were lean ones spent writing to get by. What he did with that stretch is the point of his arc. Rather than let two failures be the ending, he treated them as an apprenticeship, and in 2000 Joint Security Area became one of the biggest Korean films of its day and the turn his whole career pivoted on.
What followed built a body of work admired for its precise, elegant, meticulous craft: Oldboy won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2004, The Handmaiden drew wide acclaim in 2016, and Decision to Leave took Best Director at Cannes in 2022.
