Who is Özlem Türeci?

Twelve years with nothing to sell, and they kept building.

She was born in Siegen in 1967. Her father was a surgeon who had come to Germany from Turkey and her mother was a biologist, and she spent parts of her childhood around the hospital where her father worked. She read medicine at Saarland University and took her doctorate in 1992. It was at the university hospital there that she met Ugur Sahin, and the two of them found the same subject: teaching a patient's own immune system to recognise and attack their cancer.

They built companies rather than careers. Ganymed Pharmaceuticals came first, founded in 2001 to make monoclonal antibodies, and it was sold to Astellas in 2016 for 1.4 billion dollars. BioNTech was founded in 2008 with Christoph Huber, on messenger RNA, a technology that most of the pharmaceutical industry had written off. They married in 2002, and the story most often told about them is that they went back to the laboratory the same day. She became the company's chief medical officer in 2018. For twelve years BioNTech had no approved product at all.

In January 2020 her husband read a paper in The Lancet about a new coronavirus, and the company turned itself over to what it called Project Lightspeed. Five candidate vaccines were ready for human testing by March, the trial results in November 2020 showed better than ninety per cent effectiveness, and the vaccine was authorised in Britain in December 2020. She was appointed a professor in Mainz in 2021, and the honours followed: the Princess of Asturias Award in 2021, the Paul Ehrlich Prize in 2022, the Pour le Merite in 2023. On 10 March 2026 the couple announced they would leave BioNTech by the end of the year to start again. Her line is worth reading because the twelve years with nothing to show are the part that made the twelve months possible.
