Who is Ott Tänak?
The boy from Saaremaa, Estonia's first world champion.
He was born in 1987 in Kärla, a small village on the Estonian island of Saaremaa, where his father had rallied before him and the sound of it was part of the family. He won back to back Estonian titles as a young man, then made his World Rally Championship debut in 2009 and finished twentieth, an unknown from a country with no champion of its own. The talent was plainly there. What was not yet clear was whether it would ever find the road.
The line does not run straight up. He lost his top drive in a bruising patch that saw him drop back to the junior ranks, a low point he has spoken of as the thing he had to hit before the dream could come true. He answered it the only way that counts, by winning his way back, and in June 2017 he took his first world win at Rally Italia Sardegna. Two years later, in October 2019, driving the Toyota Yaris with his co-driver Martin Järveoja, he was crowned world champion, the first Estonian ever to hold the title.
For a nation of little more than a million people to sit at the top of a global sport is the heart of why his line is worth reading. He kept driving hard for years after, for Hyundai and for Ford and for Toyota again, a runner up twice more and a winner many times over, one of the most respected drivers of his era. In 2026 he stepped back from full time racing to be with his young family and to help build the car of the next generation, the door to a return left open.

Rally Sweden, back with Ford
Milestone. Rejoining M-Sport Ford, he won Rally Sweden, proof that the speed had not left him after years at the top.
A win in Greece
Milestone. Back with Hyundai, he won the punishing Acropolis Rally in Greece, one of the standout drives of a long career.
Runner-up, then a pause
Milestone, and it changed his direction. He finished the season as championship runner-up and then stepped back from full time racing to reset and be with his family.
Building the next car
Milestone, and it changed his direction. Away from the calendar, he joined Toyota as a development driver, testing the next works car with a return left open.
The line reaches today still turned toward the road, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. He is testing the next car and raising a young family, and on Saaremaa and across Estonia the boy from Kärla is spoken of as the one who put a small country at the very top of world rally.
