Who is Noureddine Morceli?
Seventh when it mattered, and he made it the beginning.
He was born in Tenes, a town on the Algerian coast, and started running at seven because his older brother Abderrahmane already did, a 1500m man good enough to run at two Olympic Games and later the person who coached him. At about nineteen he left for Riverside in California, drawn by its track programme, and in two years there he became a repeat state champion and ran the fastest 1500m in the world for 1990. The talent was never in doubt. What it needed was the biggest stage.
From 1991 he owned the distance. He took the world title in Tokyo at twenty one, and for a stretch in the middle of the decade he held the world records for the 1500m, the mile and the 3000m at the same time, winning three world championships in a row and going years without losing a 1500m. He ran from the front, on purpose, daring the field to keep up. The one time it went wrong was the time that counted most.
At the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona he was the overwhelming favourite, and the final crawled to a slow, tactical pace that suited everyone but him. He was boxed in and kicked past, and finished seventh. He did not wait four years to answer. Six weeks later he broke the 1500m world record, and he kept winning until Atlanta in 1996, where he took the Olympic gold that Barcelona had denied him. His line is worth reading because the defeat people remember is the one he built the rest of his career on. Alive today, he was honoured by World Athletics in 2026, his kit taken into the sport's museum.
