Who is Mutaz Essa Barshim?
The jumper who chose to share the gold.
He was born in Doha in 1991 and grew into one of the finest high jumpers the event has known. He won the world junior title in 2010, where his friendship with the Italian jumper Gianmarco Tamberi began, and stepped onto the senior stage with Olympic bronze at London 2012. Silver followed at Rio 2016, and in 2017 he won his first world championship, clearing heights only a handful of people in history have ever reached.
The line does not run straight up. In July 2018 he ruptured the ligaments in his ankle and needed surgery, and for a time it was not clear he would jump at the same level again, or at all. What he did with that year is the point of his arc: rather than let the injury be the ending, he made it a chapter, came back, and in 2019 won the world title at home in Doha before his own crowd, one of the great returns in the sport.
Then came the moment that made him known far beyond athletics. At Tokyo in 2021, level with Tamberi and offered a jump-off to decide a single winner, he asked the official whether the two friends could instead share the gold. They could, and did, in one of the most admired acts of sportsmanship the Games have seen. He went on to a third world title in 2022, and jumps on into a new decade. His line is worth reading because its highest point is not a height cleared but a hand held out.
