Who is Mohamed Salah?

The story starts with a road. As a boy in Nagrig he joined the youth setup at Al Mokawloon and then spent years travelling for hours each day, changing buses to reach training in Cairo and back, often missing school to do it. The senior debut came at seventeen, and by twenty a move to FC Basel took him out of Egypt and into Europe.
The line does not run straight up. A move to Chelsea in 2014 looked like the arrival, and instead it stalled: he sat behind established forwards and barely played. Rather than wait, he left for regular football in Italy, where Fiorentina and then Roma rebuilt him into one of the most feared forwards on the continent. Liverpool signed him in 2017, and in his first season he scored thirty two league goals, a record for a thirty eight game season, and took the Golden Boot. Then came the hardest night: injured early in the 2018 Champions League final and carried off in tears as his team lost. He answered it the next year, scoring in the final as Liverpool were crowned champions of Europe, and the league title he had waited for followed in 2020.
