The character arc of Maria Mutola
Born 27 October 1972 in Maputo. Between then and now sit an Olympic debut at fifteen, years off the podium at the biggest Games, a first world title in Stuttgart, the first Golden League jackpot ever won outright, an Olympic gold at Sydney that was her whole country's first, six Olympic Games in all, and a foundation that now sends young Mozambicans to train. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Maria Mutola?
The girl from Maputo who won a nation its first gold.
She was born in Maputo in 1972 and was still a schoolgirl playing football when her talent for running was spotted and pointed at the track. She ran at her first Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 while still only fifteen, and a scholarship soon took her far from home to train in the United States. That is where the line steepens: a girl from a country with no Olympic medal to its name, learning to race the best women in the world.
The line does not run straight up. She finished off the podium at the Barcelona Games in 1992, and after a first world title in Stuttgart in 1993 she came to Atlanta in 1996 for gold and left with bronze. What she did with those years is the point of her arc. She stayed unbeaten across a whole season in 1998 and became the first athlete to win the new Golden League jackpot outright, and she kept climbing toward the one dot that was still missing.
On 25 September 2000 in Sydney she won the 800 metres, and with it Mozambique's first and only Olympic gold. She won a third world title in Edmonton in 2001, took a million dollar Golden League season in 2003, and ran on to a sixth Olympic Games before she retired in 2008 after twenty one years. Her line is worth reading because it did not close at the finish. She turned it toward the young athletes she now finds and raises through the foundation in her name, so the arc keeps drawing through them.
