Born 19 August 1978 in Guatemala City, raised by a doctor who spent all she had on his schooling. At eight he had a computer, and around him money bought a good education while its absence took one away. He studied in the United States, helped invent CAPTCHA and then reCAPTCHA, sold that work to Google, and set out to make language learning free for the world through Duolingo. Who is Luis von Ahn?
He made the world's lessons free to learn.
He was born in Guatemala City in 1978 to a mother who was one of the first women in the country to finish medical school, and who raised him on her own. She spent what she had on his schooling, and when he was eight she bought him a computer. Around him the pattern was plain: families with money bought a fine education, and families without one barely learned to read. He decided early that this gap was the thing worth closing.
He studied in the United States, a mathematics degree at Duke and a doctorate at Carnegie Mellon, and there he helped invent CAPTCHA, the small puzzle that proves a person is not a machine. Then came reCAPTCHA, which took those few seconds of human effort and put them to work reading the words computers could not, digitising old books as people typed. Google bought it in 2009. He had learned that the small moments of millions of people, gathered up, could do something enormous.
What he really wanted was to make learning free. In 2011 he co-founded Duolingo with Severin Hacker on a simple promise: language learning that cost nothing, because that was the part that made it equal. For years there was no obvious way to earn from it, and the risk was real. He grew it anyway into the most used way in the world to learn a language, and kept the free door open. His line is worth reading because the gap he grew up beside is the gap he spent his life closing.
