Who is Lionel Messi?

As a boy in Rosario he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency, and clubs looked at his size and passed. The treatment cost more than his family could carry each month, and the one club in the world that agreed to pay for it was Barcelona, which sealed the promise on a paper napkin in December 2000. He moved across an ocean at thirteen for a chance to keep growing, and kept it.
What followed was the most decorated club career the game has known, and yet the line with his country did not run straight up. He lost the 2014 World Cup final to Germany, then a Copa America final the year after, then another in 2016, and that night he said his time with Argentina was over. Weeks later he came back. Five years on he won the Copa America, and in December 2022 he lifted the World Cup that had escaped him for so long.
The story he tells about himself is about work, not gift.
