The character arc of Levon Aronian
Born 6 October 1982 in Yerevan. Between then and now sit a childhood at the board in Soviet Armenia, a World Cup won in 2005 and again in 2017, three Olympiad team golds carried for Armenia, a season as the world number two, a marriage cut short by grief, a move to compete under the United States federation, and a run of wins that reaches this year. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Levon Aronian?
The boy from Yerevan who carried a nation to gold.
He was born in Yerevan in 1982 and learned the game as a child in a country where chess is close to a national language. His style was praised early for its imagination, a taste for sharp, inventive attacks rather than safe lines, and by the middle of the 2000s he had climbed into the small circle of the strongest players in the world. In 2005 he won the FIDE World Cup, the first of the titles that would make him one of the faces of his era, and for years he sat inside the world top five.
The part of his arc Armenians hold closest is the team board. He led his country to gold at three Chess Olympiads, in Turin in 2006, Dresden in 2008 and Istanbul in 2012, and to the World Team Championship in 2011, and in doing so he became a sporting figure for a whole nation rather than only a champion for himself. In 2014 his rating reached the second highest in the world. In 2017 he won a second World Cup and married the chess player Arianne Caoili in Yerevan.
The line does not run straight up. In March 2020 Arianne died after a road accident, and the years that followed carried that loss. In 2021 he registered with the United States Chess Federation and based his professional life in St. Louis, and he kept winning: the American Cup, freestyle grand slams including a final in Cape Town over Magnus Carlsen, and the Biel Masters in 2026. His line is worth reading because more than twenty years after his first World Cup it is still climbing.
